We stock the largest range of natural slate flooring tiles in the UK. From rustic slates with more riven surfaces to create that traditional farmhouse effect, to very smooth calibrated slates that give you that natural feeling without the riven texture. Suitable for both commercial uses such as museums and bars to all residential areas such as kitchens, conservatories and patios. Most of the tiles are suitable for both external and internal uses. Stone tiles once sealed will only require occasional cleaning or mopping with a light detergent. A stone or slate floor will last a lifetime.

The Brazilian slates are all machine calibrated to nominal tolerances, if you are looking for a very contemporary uniform floor with minimal variation we would recommend a slate from this range.

All our Chinese and Indian slates are now gauged, this means the tiles may now be machined on the reverse to greatly reduce the thickness variations. This will reduce labour, fixing time and adhesive costs. Therefore making it easier to create an even, flatter more consistent floor level with less steps and dips.

Slate is a fine grained metamorphic rock. Its main constituents are quartz, chlorite, mica & calcite. Slate is formed when ocean or riverbed sediments are compressed and heated by the earth's crust.

Guide to Calibrated, Gauged and Ungauged slates

Calibrated - This slate has been heavily machined on the reverse to make it completely smooth. There is very little variation in thickness in this slate.

Gauged - This slate has been lightly machined on the reverse to flatten the back and to remove any lumps and steps so the tile will lay flat on the subfloor without rocking.

Ungauged - This slate has just been hand split and both sides are natural

Please note all thickness's quoted are nominal. This is the average thickness of the majority of the tiles. There will still be variations from this nominal thickness. Please contact us prior to ordering if you have a thickness requirement.All the slates will still have a completely natural surface, this natural surface is still riven. Brazilian slate which is the smoothest natural slate may have up to 3 mm variation in the surface, although the majority will be much less. With some rustic slates the surface may vary by up to 5 mm or more depending on the particular colour of slate. This is a natural characteristic and not a defect. These surface variations should be taken in to account when considering the nominal thickness' of the slates.

Every slate is unique and as such may vary in colour and texture, we advise that prior to fixing all the tiles are laid out and then mixed to achieve the desired effect.

Please contact the office and tell us your requirement. If you are looking for a consistent colour please tell us, as some stones can have wide variations and it is not always possible to show all variations in one small sample. It is recommended that you visit our warehouse to the examine the actual stock for suitability and to avoid disappointment and costs

Free Sample service

If you would like to a small sample tile up to two will be sent free of charge. If you would like more than two samples a charge £10 to cover postage and packaging will be made. If you place the order with us you can use the £10 towards the cost of the total bill.
